What The Bible Really Says About Immigrants ("Strangers")

by Pastor Charles Burnett-Morrow on 06/19/18

Only one nation has ever formed a government under the direct guidance of the Almighty.  That nation was Israel!  God was very specific in His instructions as to how the new nation was to treat anyone who sought to live among them.  His every admonishment reminded them (Israel) that they too once were immigrants in Egypt, and they should therefore remember their own experience while contemplating how to treat those who came to them for asylum and refuge.  The religious right in this country constantly makes the erroneous claim that America is a "Christian nation."  Were this true, it would be incumbent upon us as a nation to follow the very specific guidelines set forth by God Himself for the treatment of Immigrants, as after all, like the people of God, Israel, we all too were once immigrants who came to this new land in pursuit of freedom and prosperity, fleeing mistreatment, abuses, and persecution.

Definition: “stranger” (Biblical definition)
1. sojourner
a. a temporary inhabitant, a newcomer lacking inherited rights
b. of foreigners in Israel, though conceded rights.

LEVITICUS 19:34
But the stranger that dwelleth with you shall be unto you as one born among you, and thou shalt love him as thyself; for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God.

EXODUS 22:21
Thou shalt neither vex a stranger, nor oppress him: for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt.

EXODUS 23:9
Also thou shalt not oppress a stranger: for ye know the heart of a stranger, seeing ye were strangers in the land of Egypt.

MATTHEW 25:34-40
34 Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: 35 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: 36 Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. 37 Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? 38 When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? 39 Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? 40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

MATTHEW 7:12
Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.

REAL Christians use the Bible as a guide to inform and instruct THEMSELVES on the ways of God and how THEY should act and behave, they do NOT use it to tell others how they should conduct themselves. Christianity is about LIVING the Word of God, not making others live it. America is ANYTHING BUT a "Christian nation" under Donald Trump!
